Understanding Social Action

Though the language is harsh, listen to it attentively -ஓடியமாகிலும் ஊடுருவக் கேள்

I am not a chauvinist: even then I succumbed to the notion that as Indians, as Tamilians, we are the best and we don’t need any imported ideas and ideologies to understand and address our problems. The solution to our problems lies in rejuvenating what we had and lost it. This attitude in a way both helped and handicapped me in several ways.

It was H.H. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Osho and JK’s teachings broke the nut in me. I started understanding the social reformers and social activists, who questioned everything we held dear to our heart, many of whom considered as atheists, are more spiritual and enlightened than those we acknowledged as spiritualists. Social activists risked their life to make the society to move forward. I realized the wisdom behind the saying “ Naarathar Kalakam Nanmaiyil Mudiyum”. (நாரதர் கலகம் நன்மையில் முடியும்) All the social activists seem to be Naarathaas, who played the tune of the existence.

As our Puratchik Kavi Bharathidasan acknowledged “ Yethanai Manitharkal ratham sorinthanaro” (சித்திரத் தோட்டங்களே உமைத் திருத்த இப்பாரினிலே முன்னம் எத்தனை தோழர்கள் ரத்தம் சொரிந்தனரோ உந்தன் வேரினிலே) …the list of social reformers and social activists who made this world better is endless.

It was a slow moving bullock cart in a narrow road amidst the farms that forced Sri. Narayanasamy Naidu of Tamilaga Vivasaayikal Sangam to follow the bullock cart slowly…his inability to overtake the cart triggered the idea of the famous bullock cart blockade in Coimbatore city in 70s, which paved the way for several policy reforms benefiting farmers of Tamilnadu. Vivasaayikal Sangam of Tamilnadu designed and carried out wonderful strategies of social action.

There were activists who were passionate about achieving great things, but it was Saul Alinsky, who made social action itself as a passion for many. It was Alinsky, it was his approach that made social action as an academic discipline.

While recalling the heritage of Tamil Cinema, Actor Kamal Hasan once remarked, Tamil actors are proud to have Sivaji Ganesan as our father and Aachi Manorama as our mother. Like that I used to in the community organization class, ‘namma aathaa (our mother) Jane Addams, namma appan (our father) Alinsky’. The mother got Nobel Prize for her services and the father once branded as a trouble maker, now recognized as a great inspirer, who inspired both Barack Obama as well as Hillary Clinton.

Social Action is an acknowledged method of social work and an approach in community work. But social workers throughout the world have not practiced it as others expected from us. Why? Social action demands commitment arose out of love for the disadvantaged, a charisma, an iron will and above all a sharp intelligence to identify the targets to support as well as to oppose…and many of us feel that we are severely lacking in these qualities. Of course we are teaching social action and not the qualities required for a social activist.

Community organization பாடத்திற்கும் ஆத்தா ஜேன் ஆடம்ஸ், அப்பன் அளின்ஸ்கி. அம்மாவோ தனது சேவைக்காக நோபல் பரிசு பெற்றார். கலகக்காரர் என்று கட்டமிடப்பட்ட அப்பாவோ இன்று, அமெரிக்க ஜனாதிபதி ஓபாமாவிற்கும், எதிர்த்து நின்ற ஹில்லாரி கிளிண்டனுக்கும் ஆதர்ச புருஷர்.
சமூகச் செயல்பாடு சமூகப் பணியின் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட முறை. ஆனால் சமூகப் பணியாளர்கள், மற்ற முறைகளுக்குக் கொடுத்த முக்கியத்துவம் சமூகச் செயல்பாட்டிற்கு ஏனோ கொடுக்கவில்லை. சமூகச் செயல்பாட்டிற்கு அன்பும், அர்பணிப்பும், திட மனமும், எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக பாதிக்கப் பட்டவர் யார்? எதிரி யார்? என்று கண்டுணரும் மதி நுட்பமும் தேவைப் படுகிறது. அது நம்மிடையே இல்லையா? இல்லை, சமூகப் பணிக் கல்லூரிகள் அதைக் கற்றுத் தர மறந்து விட்டதா?
சமூகச் செயல் பாட்டில் ஈடு படாவிட்டாலும், அதைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கலாம்.
